所以第一堂用來評估，再決定從哪一邊開始。課後，導師會告訴你觀察到甚麼，以及之後怎樣教。So the first lesson is an assessment, and it decides where to start. Afterwards the tutor tells you what was observed and how the lessons would go.
同一個方法，對一個學生有用，對另一個學生可能只是浪費時間。A method that works for one student can waste a term for another.
每堂都有讀、寫、改、講。次序固定，內容每次不同。Every lesson has reading, writing, marking and speaking. The order is fixed; the material is not.
讀Read
學生先讀一段。導師不先解釋，先問他讀到甚麼。The student reads a passage first. The tutor does not explain it, and asks what the student understood.
寫Write
課堂內寫一段，有時限，寫在紙上。A paragraph written in the lesson, to time, on paper.
改Mark
一起改那一頁：哪一句改了，為甚麼改。The page is marked together: which sentence changed, and why.
講Speak
最後幾分鐘用英語把剛寫的說一次。The last few minutes are in English, saying back what was just written.
寫作與說話都在導師眼前發生，所以知道學生是自己做到，還是在複述。The writing and the speaking both happen in front of the tutor, so it is clear whether the student is doing the work or repeating it.
同一個分數，背後的原因可以完全不同。The same mark can come from very different places.
讀得慢，題目做不完Reads slowly, runs out of time
多數不是生字，是每句都停下來解。堂上計時讀一次，記下他在哪一句停。Usually not unknown words, but stopping to decode every sentence. We time one passage and note the sentence where the student stops.
寫得通順，答不到題Fluent, but off the question
句子對，但沒有回答題目問的事。改的時候先對題目，再對句子。The sentences are correct and do not answer what was asked. Marking checks the question first, then the sentence.
看得明白，講不出來Understands, cannot speak
意思到了，出口之前先翻譯一次。堂上先講，講完才寫。The meaning arrives, then it is translated before it comes out. The lesson speaks first and writes afterwards.
補了很久，分數不動Tutored for long, no movement
同一個方法重複，練習的類型沒有換過。換練習，不是加鐘數。The same method repeated, with the same kind of exercise. Change the exercise, not the number of hours.
導師的專長是這四個，不是孩子必須考的試。學生讀哪一個，我們就按那一個教。These four are what the tutors teach, not examinations your child has to sit. We teach the programme the student is in.
兩年制。英文分 Language A（語言與文學）與 Language B（第二語言），校內評核與公開試都有口頭與書面兩部分。A two-year diploma. English runs as Language A (language and literature) or Language B (a second language), assessed in school and in the final examinations, in speech and in writing.
兩年制，多數學校在中四、中五應考。英文分 First Language 與 Second Language，視乎學校選哪一個考試局。A two-year course, usually sat in the fourth and fifth years. English runs as First Language or Second Language, depending on the board.
升學與移民都用。分 Academic 與 General Training，四份卷是聆聽、閱讀、寫作與會話。Used for study and for migration. It comes as Academic or General Training, with four papers: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
美國大學本科入學試。英文部分是 Reading and Writing，以數碼形式應考。A US undergraduate admissions test. The English side is Reading and Writing, sat digitally.
四份卷的形狀不同。同一個學生，換一份卷，練的東西就不同。The four papers are shaped differently. Change the paper and the practice changes with it.
IB 英文IB English
Language A 考未見文本的分析（Paper 1）、兩部作品的比較（Paper 2）與個人口試；Language B 考閱讀、寫作與口試。Language A: an analysis of an unseen text (Paper 1), a comparison of two works (Paper 2) and an individual oral. Language B: reading, writing and an oral.
IGCSE 英文IGCSE English
閱讀卷加寫作卷；寫作包括引導寫作與一篇作文，記敘、描述或議論。部分考試局另設口試與課程作業。A reading paper and a writing paper. The writing is a directed task plus one composition: narrative, descriptive or argumentative. Some boards add a speaking test and coursework.
IELTSIELTS
寫作分兩題：第一題描述圖表，第二題是一篇 250 字的議論。會話與考官面對面進行。Writing has two tasks: a chart description, then a 250-word argument. The speaking test is face to face with an examiner.
SATSAT
Reading and Writing 以短段落為主，考的是句子與段落的邏輯，不是長篇分析。Reading and Writing works on short passages. It tests the logic of sentences and paragraphs, not long-form analysis.
四份卷通往的地方不同，多數由學校的路徑決定，不由補習決定。The four papers lead to different places, and which one a student sits is usually decided by the school's path, not by the tutor.
IB 與 IGCSE 的成績用於非聯招申請。IGCSE 本身不是入學試，多數是中途的檢查點。IB and IGCSE results go into non-JUPAS applications. IGCSE is not itself an admissions test; it is a checkpoint along the way.
大學與簽證多數看 IELTS。成績兩年內有效。Universities and visa routes usually ask for IELTS. A result stays valid for two years.
本科申請看 SAT。不少大學已改為不強制提交，提交與否按學校公布。Undergraduate applications look at the SAT. Many universities have made it optional, and each states what it asks for.
同一位導師，由第一次評估跟到考試。The same tutor, from the first assessment to the examination.
堂上以英語進行，學生要用英語答。導師會讀學生校內的課本、試卷與老師的評語，因為堂上練的應該是學校正在教的那一份。Lessons run in English and the student answers in English. The tutor reads the textbook the class uses, past papers and the teacher's comments, because what is practised should be what the school is teaching.
四份卷由同一位導師教，不轉介給其他人。One tutor covers all four papers. There is no hand-off.
學校教課程，我們練卷上要得分的那幾件事。The school teaches the course. We practise what the paper marks.
評估之後只建議一個起點，不開一張十項清單。After the assessment, one place to start, not a ten-item plan.
練習用學生自己的作文與學校的試卷，不派一套通用講義。Practice uses the student's writing and the school's papers, not a generic handout.
